Safety Guidelines

Effective Date: March 5, 2026

Your safety is important to us. MapleMarket is a classifieds platform that connects buyers and sellers, but we are not involved in the actual transactions. Because most exchanges happen in person between strangers, we strongly encourage all users to follow these guidelines to protect themselves.

1. Meeting in Person — General Safety

The safest way to complete a transaction is to meet in person in a public place. Follow these guidelines whenever meeting another user:

  • Choose a public, well-lit location: Meet at a busy coffee shop, shopping mall, library, community centre, or other public space with good visibility and foot traffic. Avoid meeting at private residences, secluded areas, or unfamiliar locations
  • Use a police "Safe Exchange Zone": Many Canadian police stations offer designated safe exchange zones specifically for online marketplace transactions. These areas are typically well-lit, under video surveillance, and available 24/7. Check with your local police service to find the nearest one
  • Tell someone your plans: Before meeting a buyer or seller, tell a friend or family member where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you expect to return. Share the listing details and the other person's contact information if possible
  • Bring a companion: Whenever possible, bring a friend or family member with you to the meeting. There is safety in numbers
  • Meet during daylight hours: Schedule meetings during the day when visibility is best and public places are busiest. Avoid late-night meetings
  • Drive yourself: Use your own transportation so you can leave at any time. Avoid getting into the other person's vehicle
  • Stay in public view: Conduct the entire transaction in a public area. Do not follow the other person to a secondary location, even if they suggest it for convenience
  • Trust your instincts: If something feels wrong — the person seems aggressive, evasive, or the situation feels unsafe — leave immediately. No transaction is worth your safety. You can always cancel or reschedule
  • Keep your phone charged: Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged before the meeting in case you need to contact someone or call for help

2. High-Value Transactions

Extra caution is warranted for high-value items such as vehicles, electronics, jewellery, and other expensive goods:

  • For vehicles, meet at a public parking lot during business hours. Bring a knowledgeable friend or hire a mobile mechanic to inspect the vehicle before purchase
  • Consider using a police safe exchange zone for items worth more than $500
  • For very high-value transactions, consider meeting at your bank so payment can be verified immediately
  • Never hand over the item before receiving full payment, and never send payment before receiving the item
  • For vehicles, complete the transfer of ownership at a ServiceOntario (or equivalent provincial) office where possible, to ensure proper registration

3. Protecting Your Personal Information

Be careful about what personal information you share with other users:

  • Use the Platform's messaging system: Communicate through MapleMarket's built-in messaging rather than sharing your personal phone number or email address right away. This provides a record of your conversations and keeps your contact information private
  • Never share financial information: Do not share your bank account number, credit card details, Social Insurance Number (SIN), or other sensitive financial information with any user
  • Do not share government identification: No legitimate buyer or seller will need to see your driver's licence, passport, or other government-issued ID. Never share photos of your ID
  • Be cautious with your address: Avoid sharing your home address with strangers. If you must meet at your home (for example, for large furniture items), have someone else present and consider having the buyer meet you at the nearest intersection first
  • Guard your personal details: Avoid sharing information about your daily routine, work schedule, family situation, or other personal details that could be misused
  • Use a separate email: Consider using a separate email address for your marketplace activities to protect your primary email account

4. Payment Safety — Avoiding Fraud

Payment fraud is one of the most common risks in classifieds transactions. Protect yourself by following these guidelines:

  • Cash is safest for in-person transactions: For local, in-person transactions, cash remains the simplest and safest form of payment. Count the cash carefully in the presence of the other party before completing the transaction
  • Use trusted digital payment methods: If you prefer electronic payment, use well-known peer-to-peer payment services. Verify that the payment has been received and confirmed in your account before handing over the item
  • Never accept cheques or money orders: Personal cheques, cashier's cheques, and money orders can be forged or cancelled after the transaction. Even if a cheque initially appears to clear, it can bounce days or weeks later, leaving you responsible
  • Never accept overpayment: If a buyer sends more than the asking price and asks you to refund the difference, this is almost certainly a scam. The original payment will bounce, and you will lose both the item and the "refunded" amount
  • Avoid wire transfers: Never send money by wire transfer (Western Union, MoneyGram, or similar services) to someone you met on a classifieds platform. Wire transfers are nearly impossible to reverse and are a favourite tool of scammers
  • Avoid cryptocurrency and gift card payments: Be wary of buyers or sellers who insist on payment via cryptocurrency or gift cards. These payment methods are difficult to trace and nearly impossible to recover
  • Do not release goods until payment clears: If you accept any form of electronic payment, wait until the funds are fully cleared and confirmed in your account before releasing the item. "Pending" payments are not confirmed payments
  • Keep records: Save all communication, screenshots of the listing, payment confirmations, and receipts related to the transaction

5. Shipping Safety

While in-person transactions are generally safer, if you do ship an item, take these precautions:

  • Be skeptical of shipping-only requests: Scammers often insist on shipping-only transactions to avoid meeting in person. If a buyer refuses to meet locally and insists on shipping, proceed with caution
  • Use tracked and insured shipping: Always use a shipping service with tracking and insurance (such as Canada Post, FedEx, or UPS). Keep the tracking number and shipping receipt as proof of delivery
  • Ship only after confirmed payment: Never ship an item before payment has fully cleared in your account
  • Ship to the verified address: Only ship to the address provided by the payment service. Do not ship to an alternate address at the buyer's request
  • Document the item before shipping: Take clear photographs of the item's condition and packaging before shipping. This provides evidence in case of disputes
  • Be wary of international shipping requests: Be cautious of requests to ship items internationally, as these carry higher fraud risk and may be difficult to resolve

6. Verifying Listings Before Buying

Protect yourself from scams and misrepresentation by thoroughly verifying listings before making a purchase:

  • Research the market value: If a price seems too good to be true, it usually is. Research comparable listings and market prices before committing to a purchase
  • Request additional photos: Ask the seller for additional photographs, including close-ups, photos of serial numbers, and photos from different angles. A legitimate seller will not mind providing extra images
  • Inspect in person: Whenever possible, inspect the item in person before paying. Test electronics, check for damage, and verify that the item matches the listing description
  • Verify serial numbers: For electronics, record the serial number or IMEI number and verify that it has not been reported stolen or blacklisted
  • Vehicle verification: For vehicles, request a CARFAX or CarProof vehicle history report. Verify the VIN matches the registration. Check for liens through your provincial registry. Consider having a trusted mechanic perform a pre-purchase inspection
  • Rental verification: For rental listings, verify that the person has authority over the property. Never pay a deposit without seeing the property in person. Be wary of landlords who are "out of town" and want you to wire a deposit
  • Check the seller's profile: Review the seller's profile, account age, and any ratings or reviews from previous transactions. Newer accounts with limited history warrant extra caution

7. Common Scams to Watch For

Overpayment Scam

A buyer contacts you and sends payment (often by cheque or money order) for more than the asking price. They ask you to refund the difference, often claiming it was a mistake or that the extra amount is to cover shipping or a "moving agent." The original payment later bounces, and you lose both the refunded amount and the item. Never accept overpayment from anyone.

Shipping-Only Scam

A buyer or seller insists on completing the transaction entirely through shipping, refusing to meet in person. The buyer may send a fraudulent payment, or the seller may collect payment and never ship the item. Prefer in-person transactions and, if shipping, use tracked and insured methods only after payment has fully cleared.

Advance Fee Scam

You are asked to pay a fee, deposit, or cost upfront before receiving an item, service, or payment. The scammer may claim it covers "insurance," "shipping," "customs," or "processing." Legitimate transactions never require advance fees from the buyer beyond the purchase price.

Fake Rental Scam

A scammer lists a rental property they do not own (often copying photos from real estate websites). They offer an attractive price and ask for a deposit or first and last month's rent before you can view the property. Always view a rental property in person before paying anything, and verify the landlord's identity and authority.

Phishing and Account Takeover

You receive a message or email that appears to be from MapleMarket, asking you to click a link and enter your login credentials. The link leads to a fake website designed to steal your account information. MapleMarket will never ask for your password via email or message. Always verify that you are on the official MapleMarket website before entering your credentials.

Employment Scam

A listing offers a job opportunity that requires you to pay upfront for training materials, equipment, or background checks. Legitimate employers do not ask candidates to pay fees to be considered for a job.

Counterfeit Goods

A seller lists brand-name products at unusually low prices. The items turn out to be counterfeit replicas. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, and verify authenticity before purchasing high-value branded items.

8. Warning Signs of a Scam

Be alert for these red flags that may indicate a scam:

  • The price is significantly below market value for no apparent reason
  • The seller or buyer is unwilling to meet in person or speak by phone
  • The person claims to be out of town, deployed overseas, or otherwise unavailable
  • You are asked to wire money, send gift cards, or use cryptocurrency
  • You are pressured to act quickly or told the deal will expire
  • The person requests personal financial information such as bank details or SIN
  • Communication is vague, generic, or contains many grammatical errors typical of mass-produced scam messages
  • The person insists on using an unusual payment method or a specific third-party service
  • The person asks you to continue communication outside of the Platform
  • The photos in the listing appear to be stock images or are found on other websites

9. Reporting Suspicious Activity

If you encounter a suspicious listing, a potential scam, or any behaviour that makes you feel unsafe, please take the following steps:

  • Report on MapleMarket: Use the "Report this listing" button available on every listing page, or contact us at support@maplemarketapp.com. Provide as much detail as possible, including screenshots and relevant message history
  • Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: Report fraud or suspected fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online at antifraudcentre.ca
  • Contact local police: If you believe a crime has been committed or you feel your safety is at risk, contact your local police service immediately. In an emergency, call 911
  • Report identity theft: If your personal information has been compromised, contact your bank, credit card companies, and the two major Canadian credit bureaus (Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada) to place a fraud alert on your file
